Land area converter for regional and standard units

This tool converts Bigha, Katha, Square Feet, Decimal/Satak, Acre, Hectare, Square Meter and Square Yard. It uses square feet as the internal base so every result is calculated from one consistent area. The important exception is the meaning of customary units such as Bigha and Katha: those are not standardized across India, so the selected regional preset matters.

For legal or survey work, treat the calculator as a comparison aid. A deed, record-of-rights entry, survey map or instruction from the relevant land authority should take priority if it defines a local unit differently.

What the three presets mean

Kolkata / West Bengal

The Kolkata preset uses 1 Bigha = 20 Katha and 1 Katha = 720 square feet, giving 1 Bigha = 14,400 square feet. A National Generic Document Registration System gap-analysis report prepared by NIC lists the same West Bengal relationships and also describes an acre as 100 decimals. The converter therefore uses 435.6 square feet for 1 Decimal/Satak, which is one-hundredth of an acre.

Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Ministry of Land lists 1 Bigha = 20 Katha, 1 Bigha = 14,400 square feet, 1 Katha ≈ 720 square feet and 1 Decimal/Shotok ≈ 435.6 square feet. The ministry also presents some customary relationships as approximate. To keep the calculator internally consistent, this tool uses 435.6 square feet per Decimal; therefore 1 Bigha converts to about 33.06 Decimal.

India reference

India does not have one nationwide Bigha or Katha size. Government land-data standards show different customary definitions in different states and regions. The India button in this tool is therefore a clearly labelled reference preset, currently configured as 1 Bigha = 20 Katha = 27,000 square feet. Use a state- or locality-specific record whenever the result will be used for a transaction, registration, mutation, partition, taxation or boundary decision.

Standard conversion formulas used by the tool

The converter first calculates the entered area in square feet and then divides that base area by the selected result unit's square-foot factor. The standard factors used here are: 1 Acre = 43,560 square feet, 1 Hectare ≈ 107,639.104 square feet, 1 Square Meter ≈ 10.7639 square feet and 1 Square Yard = 9 square feet.

For example, under the Kolkata preset, 2.5 Bigha = 2.5 × 14,400 = 36,000 square feet. Because 1 Bigha = 20 Katha in that preset, the same area is 50 Katha. At 435.6 square feet per Decimal, it is about 82.64 Decimal.

How to use the converter

  1. Select India, Kolkata or Bangladesh so the customary-unit factors match the intended preset.
  2. Choose the unit shown on your source document or listing.
  3. Enter one value. All result cards update immediately without a submit button.
  4. Tap a result card to make that unit the input unit while preserving the same physical land area.
  5. Use the swap control to move between the current and previous input units, or use a Popular conversion shortcut.
  6. Before legal use, compare the result with the conversion standard used by the relevant land record or authority.

Why Bigha and Katha can differ by place

Bigha and related customary units developed regionally, so identical names do not guarantee identical areas. Government data standards for Indian land records list multiple local units and different conversion factors, which is why a single national Bigha value would be misleading. This tool keeps the regional choice visible instead of hiding that difference.

Accuracy, rounding and legal use

Results are calculated with higher internal precision than the rounded values shown on screen. Display rounding is for readability and should not be treated as a survey measurement. The calculator does not determine title, ownership, parcel boundaries, encumbrances, mutation status or the legally recorded extent of a plot.

If a deed or government record uses a historical or locality-specific conversion, follow that source. For a purchase, registration, partition, construction or boundary dispute, verify the area with the appropriate land office or a qualified survey professional.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is one Bigha the same everywhere in India?

No. Bigha is a customary unit and its size varies by state and locality. Use a local land-record standard rather than assuming one national value.

2. How many Katha are in 1 Bigha in the Kolkata preset?

The Kolkata / West Bengal preset uses 1 Bigha = 20 Katha. With 1 Bigha set to 14,400 square feet, 1 Katha is 720 square feet.

3. How many square feet are in 1 Bigha in Kolkata?

This calculator uses 14,400 square feet for 1 Bigha in the Kolkata preset.

4. Are Decimal, Satak and Shotok the same?

They are commonly used for the one-hundredth-of-an-acre land unit in the regions covered here. This tool uses 1 Decimal/Satak = 435.6 square feet. Local records should still be checked for their stated convention.

5. How many square feet are in 1 Decimal?

This tool uses 435.6 square feet for 1 Decimal, equal to one-hundredth of an acre.

6. How many square feet are in 1 Acre?

1 Acre = 43,560 square feet. The calculator uses that factor for Acre conversions in every preset.

7. Why does the value change when I switch regional presets?

If the selected input unit is a customary regional unit such as Bigha or Katha, the same entered quantity is reinterpreted using the newly selected preset. Standard units such as Square Feet, Acre and Hectare keep the same physical area.

8. What happens when I tap a result card?

The selected result unit becomes the new input unit and the input value is converted so the underlying land area stays the same.

9. Can I use the result for land registration or a legal deed?

Use it for calculation and comparison, not as a substitute for an official survey or record. For legal work, verify the applicable unit definition with the deed, survey record or relevant land authority.
