A small board with plenty to think about

2048 is a sliding number puzzle played on a four-by-four board. Move the tiles in one direction to slide every tile as far as it can go. When two matching tiles meet, they combine into a tile worth twice as much. Merge two 2s to make 4, two 4s to make 8, and keep building towards the 2048 tile.

The challenge comes from managing the limited space. Each valid move adds a new tile to the board, so a move that looks harmless can make the next decision harder. You can take as long as you like between moves. There is no timer and no need to rush a promising position.

How to play on any screen

  1. Start with the two tiles already on the board.
  2. Swipe across the board on a touch screen, or use the four direction buttons below it.
  3. On a keyboard, focus the board and use the arrow keys.
  4. Combine equal numbers and keep empty spaces available.
  5. Reach 2048, then choose whether to keep playing for a higher score.

The New game button clears the current board and resets the current score. Your best score remains on this browser when local storage is available. The current board itself is not saved, so leaving or reloading the page begins a fresh game. Finish an interesting round before navigating away.

Understand how a move is resolved

All tiles slide together in the chosen direction. Matching neighbours then combine once during that move. A tile created by a merge does not merge again until a later move. For example, moving a row containing 2, 2, 2 and 2 to the left produces 4, 4 and two empty spaces before a new tile appears. It does not produce an 8 in the same move.

A row containing 2, 2, 4 and an empty space becomes 4, 4 and two empty spaces when moved left. On the next left move, those two 4s can combine. Thinking about this once-per-move rule helps you predict the board instead of relying on trial and error.

After a move that changes the board, a new tile appears in a random empty square. It is usually a 2 and occasionally a 4. A direction that cannot move or merge any tile does not add a new tile. Your score increases by the value of each merged tile, rather than simply counting how many turns you have taken.

Build a position you can manage

One useful approach is to keep your largest tile near a corner and arrange smaller values alongside it. That can help you combine tiles in an orderly sequence. It is a strategy, not a guarantee: sometimes the available spaces force you to move a large tile away from its preferred position.

Before each move, look at what will happen across all four rows or columns. A merge in one part of the board can block another. Keeping several spaces open gives new tiles somewhere to appear and creates more room for later moves. Avoid filling the board with alternating values that cannot combine easily.

When a move goes badly, take a moment to understand why. Perhaps the new tile blocked a line, or a large tile separated two smaller matching values. The random tile positions make each round different, but recognising these patterns can make your decisions more deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

When does the game end?

The game ends when every square is occupied and no horizontally or vertically adjacent tiles can merge. A full board is not necessarily lost if a merge remains available.

Can I continue after reaching 2048?

Yes. The game pauses to recognise the milestone. Choose Keep playing to continue building larger tiles.

Why did my best score disappear?

The best score belongs to this browser and device. Clearing site data, using a private session or changing browsers can remove it.

Do I need to swipe precisely?

No. A clear horizontal or vertical swipe inside the board is enough. The arrow buttons provide an alternative when swiping is uncomfortable.
